Random acts of stupidity and kindness

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

As anyone currently in London is aware, the NHS has been very generous with the distribution of cotton wool. I’m not sure what we’re supposed to do with this much of the stuff, and I don’t understand why it’s so cold, but still – it was nice of them.

While out in this mushy frozen white stuff this morning, a dear old lady drove her car down the road into the park. Then made a u-turn. Then tried to drive out of the park. I’m not convinced this dear should be driving on any day, let alone today of all days, but the end result was the car spinning its wheels like crazy, compacting the snow all around the wheels into ice.

We wandered over after a while and tried to help, but it was too late by then – her car was dancing on ice and there was no BBC team in sight.

Fortunately, a man from Newham / Serco (the people responsible for ruining the DLR) arrived with a shovel and helped dig her out of her mess.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t his job to do this, and I’m pretty sure he didn’t have to. But he did anyway. That’s such a rare sight these days, but it really gives me hope.

I can give for you some money?

I think I’ve worked out how businesses can beat this recession thingamy. While hedge fund managers and bankers will sell you advice based on magical mathemagical formulae, I’m going the altruistic route and giving the solution away for free! Keep reading to discover the simple 3 step plan guaranteed to keep you going, even in the toughest economic conditions.

No matter how bad Robert Preston says things are, you can beat the bust!

  1. Have stuff
  2. Tell me about the stuff you have
  3. Take my money and give me the stuff

This all sounds quite simple, but I’ve got some stunning examples and counter-examples of all of the above. Some people got my money. Some people just got a mention here. They probably didn’t want the mention here.

Lemmings leaping for Cancer Research UK

Hand over your wallet, your keys and your jewellery… Do it nice and slow, then back up and nobody has to get hurt!

Ok, so business has been slow in the mugging game for a while, but we’re deadly serious about needing your money now, so we’re going to try plan B… If you all give generously, Cheryl will wander over the edge of a really tall building at Canary Wharf for your viewing pleasure and / or horror. Just to make sure she doesn’t get any funny ideas and try and climb back up, I’ll go along to tread on her fingers if need be. (Hopefully she’ll wait up and give directions, just in case I get lost half way down)

We’re asking / begging (and if it comes to it, mugging) you for sponsorship for an Abseil down Canary Wharf on 11 May 2008.

Have you ever looked at the ground from 230ft up (that’s 70m for those of us from outside the imperial system)? Now think about what it would take to make you step off of a ledge so that all you have between you and that much gravity is a rope? Thought about it? So you’re going to donate lots then, right ? ;)

On a more serious note, I’m sure that many of you know someone who has been affected by cancer, and I’m sure you’ve seen the courage and effort required to fight the beast. Cancer Research UK needs all the help they can get in trying to make this a thing of the past.

Donating is easy… just visit http://www.justgiving.com/pascoes – they’ll helpfully take your money from most internationally accepted credit and debit cards, so you can’t even use the excuse of not being able to get us the cash or being from forrin parts:) If you’re not comfortable donating online, or are skint at the moment, we’ll take your promise of future cash and make the donation in your name now.

If you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you – so stick it to the man, uh, please? If you’re not a UK tax payer (or are currently dead for tax reasons) please don’t run off, we’d still like your money!

So please sponsor us now! Now! NOW! NOWNOWNOW! (Have you done it yet? Have you? Have you? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Huh? Are we!? :D )
